I have upgraded Firefox 3.0b5 with 3.0RC1 and I've lost my bookmarks in the process (which is not the cause of this bug report).
I have then tried to restore my bookmarks thanks to:
Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks Import and Backup -> Restore -> pick a file
but this doesn't work. Whatever the file I select I still have an error message which says "Unable to process restoration file".
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
I've tried to restore the bookmarks by reinstalling 3.0b5: no success.
I've also tried with 3.0rc1 and 3.0b5 on linux: no success.
The only difference between 3.0b5 and 3.0rc1 is hat 3.0b5 fails silently whereas 3.0rc1 fails with an error message.

Can you try selecting "Import HTML", navigate to your profile directory, and import the bookmarks.html file there?
"Restore" only works for the JSON backup files generated by Firefox 3.

Yes, this is exactly what I try to achieve and that doesn't work !
I don't try to import a html file, I don't have any.

Just trying to make things clear, have you looked in your profile folder for the bookmarks.preplaces.html file? Is it there, and if so can you import it?

bug 458683 and bug 448584 are possible causes of this
we can't check which of them is the culprit without looking at current json or places.sqlite, so resolving incomplete.
feel free to reopen if you can provide one of them, hwv this should be fixed for 3.1

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
