Tb 2.0.0.14
Uncollapsing and opening group leads to error as in attachment. Cannot get out of loop in error-alert + username-pop and have to kill app.
Steps:
Subscribe to 15 groups in news.mozilla.org
Open /uncollapse so that they start refresh ..
Immediately go to last one (mdtsvg here if htat has importance)
Click on a msg in that
get the error as in capture attach,
on several ok pops username
Either ok or cancel in username gets back to error
infinite loop of these errot/pop-username
Have to kill app or eventually wait for quality agent..
(+Memory goes crazy as attach)
reproducible: always (on 2.0..0.14 for now)
It may be related to avast antivirus limit connections to 20, but what intrigues me is that I cannot get out of the loop, stop the news dld etc. So it leads to hang/kill/eventual dead end ..
I'll test on 3 and try q agent ..

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080421 Lightning/0.8 Thunderbird/2.0.0.14 - Build ID: 2008042104
I cannot seam to be able to reproduce it in same 2.0.0.14, another (cleaner) profile, 16ng subscribed, svg or other stressed as described.
But it does occur on default profile. I'll try to see 3 and extensions.
TB3 not reproducing
TB2 in another (cleaner) profile added ThreadVis extension
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/6533
stressed ng and got the very same error!
Uninstall in default profile, error gone ..
that is the fault !
(only got read of it in default profile by completely uninstall extension, not deactivating it)
Summary: news nntp error infinite alert/pop loop (avast connection limit 20) → news nntp error infinite alert/pop loop (avast connection limit 20) ThreadVis
Last note.
Used ThreadVis kinda ok in mails, just not activating indexing for news.
considering an extension issue I'll mark as wfm. (Correct me if invalid would be appropriate)

Yes I think INVALID is the way to go for problem caused by extension issues.

We're now tracking such bugs. This doesn't mean it's something we can fix, merely something we hope to be able to point vendors to so they can investigate. This is an automated message.

Closing old bugs in the Plugins component. We aren't going to track issues in 3rd-party plugins in the Mozilla bug tracker. In addition, support for NPAPI plugins will be removed at the end of this year; for more details see the post at https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/
If there is a serious bug in Firefox, it needs to be filed in the "Core" product, "Plug-Ins" component.
