Details

Using any of a variety of nightly builds over the course of the past several months (April-June, 2000), Mozilla is /extremely/ slow on Red Hat Linux 6.1 running on a Pentium processor. This is true whether using GNOME, KDE, or fvwm. This can be observed loading any page, including the standard default page installed with Apache. Running GNOME or KDE, Mozilla is several (5?) times slower than Netscape 4.61. Running fvwm, Mozilla is 10-100 times slower than Netscape 4.61. For example, to load the Apache default page, served by the local machine, took about 13 seconds using Mozilla. The page loaded instantaneously (less than one second) using Netscape. This problem is very serious, as it renders Mozilla useless on this platform. I was surprised that a search turned up few reports of slow performance on Linux. On the Macintosh platform, by contrast, recent builds compare favorably to Netscape 4.7. I am sorry to be so general but this is a very global (and obvious) problem.
