If you configure Firefox to open something it doesn't understand in Firefox, it just goes into a loop of opening more windows. The fix is to configure Firefox not to open that file type in Firefox.
Can we get a use-case for this?
I think Jason was referring to cases where someone gets an "Open with" dialog when clicking a download link and chooses Firefox as the "helper" application for opening the file. This results in an infinite loop as Firefox keeps passing the action onto itself and opens countless tabs (or windows) until you end the Firefox process. It's ready for review: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Many+windows+open+after+downloading I uploaded a screenshot for Ubuntu, but decided not to use it in the article, because it doesn't show the drop-down menu properly. I will try to get a better screenshot using different tools. I wasn't able to get screenshots for Mac or Windows, because I couldn't reproduce the behavior of setting the action to "use firefox"; FF wouldn't let me make that choice on those platforms (so Bug 218257 may be fixed there?).
