Do you have a "Type 1 font" version of Helvetica installed? See bug 396315 for similar reports from the period leading up to Firefox 3. There was a patch in that bug that fixed the problem for most people; this is the first report I've seen since then.
Summary: Helvetica font rendering garbeled/garbage on some web sites → Helvetica font rendering garbled/garbage on some web sites
Yes, I do use Helvetica fonts that I installed for graphics and design work. My works system is running XP and has those fonts installed. I removed the fonts I installed on my home vista machine... and it works fine. So it looks like the old Helvetica fonts are still causing the problem.

In trying to track down some details on this today, I discovered the following (using the Web Developer addon to edit css while viewing http://www.smashingmagazine.com):
- if the CSS definition defines the font family using font: instead of font-family:, this bug does not occur.
- when setting the font-family by way of font-family: (instead of by font:), the error only occurs once you're showing fonts over 20pixels in size. It doesn't matter if the font size is set by way of em or px, but once the actual display size is over 20px, it gets garbled.
We got a couple of these these past few weeks on the forums, does anyone have suggested steps other than delete the helveticas?
