From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/4.73 [en] (Win95; U) BuildID: 2000062108 I would really appreciate it if I could create a profile that points to an existing set of files. Currently, I make a new profile, and then copy files over the files mozilla generates. Also, I would appreciate a password mechanism. That would make things much more secure! Thanks!! Keep up the good work & saving the world from the monopolistic ways of M$$FT Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.n/a 2. 3. Actual Results: n/a Expected Results: n/a Thanks!

There are two bugs out there that address these issues, see bug 17457 for ability to use existing profile files (waiting for UI), bug 16489 for passwords on profiles. This should probably be a duplicate of one of them- ?
Though there isn't way to enforce using the same set of files from the profile manager frontend (which willbe in place when 17457 is fixed), the following mechanism allows user to use the existing set of files. What needs to be done for that : 1. Open profile manager. 2. Create new profile 3. Instead of selecting the default profile path, choose the profile directory of your choice. One thing to remember here is that, your profile name is always appended to the path you have chosen. So, if such folder already exists...choose a folder one level up. If such directory doesn't exists...create a folder with that name and move all files to that location, but you still need to select the parent folder) 4. Then click on finish. 5. You will find browser finding all your bookmarks and preferences 6. One thing to note here is that on choosing to delete profile information for this folder you are choosing to delete this pointed folder. Fix to bug 17457 would provide enhanced user experience with a dialog asking user to confirm the usage of existing directory. Having said that....this bug now boils down to be a dup of 16489, a bug opened for implementation of passwords for profiles.. Marking this as a dup. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 16489 ***

I agree also. I would highly recommend a UI feature that has a button to import existing profiles though. Not everyone will realize that they will be prompted to overwrite or use existing profiles. Thanks!
