Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1
Mozilla is set up to use proxy auto-detection (corporate environment). When proxy auto-detection is not available (I am at home without corporate access) checking for update fails with "Update XML file malformed". I expect it checking for update behave as normal browsing - i.e. if proxy could not be detected, assume direct connection and proceed.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure proxy auto-detection
2. Ensure no proxy auto-detection is available
3. Try to launch checking for update from Help menu
Actual Results:
After some time error window pops up "Update XML file malformed"
Expected Results:
FIrefox assumes direct connection and proceeds with checking for update
Was there in all 2.x versions as well as far as I can remember

Did you try the menu entry more than once (could be failing only the first time).

If I try it several times in a row, sometimes it works and sometimes it fails. I do not see any pattern in it. The very first time it fails always.
