I can configure a mail/news account to use SSL, and when I do so, the icon
for the account changes to one with a lock (a lock on a folder for mail,
a lock on a talk balloon for news). But while I am connected to a mail
or mews server, there is no way for me to see the security status of the
connection. There is no way to see the server's certificate, and no way
to see what level of security (40 bit, 128 bit, 256 bit. etc.) was used by
the connection to the server.
The browser has a lock icon in the lower right corner, on which I can click
to get access to all that information. The code to display all that is in
PSM, which is part of core, so it shouldn't take much to make it work in
the mail/news client. There just doesn't seem to be any way to invoke it
in the mail/news client. There should be.
