449210 - [bn-IN] Firefox 3 protocol handler setup for Bengali

Protocol handlers are a new feature in Firefox 3 that allows links like mailto:[e-mail] to be handled by a webmail application.

In order to do that, the site needs to support a special API described on http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web-based_protocol_handlers.

For en-US, we're currently shipping with Yahoo! Mail for mailto: and 30boxes for webcal: urls, and we're on a ongoing evangelism effort to add more. Gmail and ms live mail are coming up shortly. For Bengali, we'd like to do that, too.

First, the localization team and Mic (Michal Berman) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good candidates. Runa, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. Following that is a reach out by the evangelism team to try to get the vendor to support protocol handlers.

Once that happens, Axel will take over in reviewing the actual implementation, which will need to change the gecko.handlerService.* entries in bn-IN/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties. Please don't make changes to that file without getting a positive review by Axel or somebody else appointed by Mic on a patch for that change upfront.

We currently have the 3.0 en-US state in the tree, which should be good enough for a Beta release, at least.

For bn-IN:

@ mailto: Yahoo! Mail looks good at the moment. However we would probably like to move to gmail once that is supported.

@ webcal: Would it be possible to use Google Calendar (calendar.google.com) or Yahoo! Calendar (calendar.yahoo.com)?

on webcal, unfortunately Google Calendar is not available to us yet so our only option is 30 boxes at present (or a local option were there one available)

Is Yahoo! Calendar out of reckoning as well?

If yes, I'd go ahead with 30boxes as Google and Yahoo! Calendars are the two popular web cals that are primarily used.

yes, Yahoo! Calendar is not available at this time - so let's go ahead with existing protocol handlers.

Runa - one more thing - can you confirm that when Gmail, MSN LiveMail are available you would like to "opt-in" to those as well for bn. thanks

OK, we have the 3.0 handlers in cvs in region.properties, Mic, if you add bn-IN to the rewrite list for gmail and msn, we can close this bug out.
