have you tried the "Restore Defaults" Button, when you click Manage Search Engines ? This should bring the search engines like Google back

It's not difficult to get back, you just need to click "Restore default engines". The user that was having trouble was apparently "hacked", so that might explain why that didn't work for them. Either that or they didn't see the button - do you think it needs to be made more discoverable?
Even if Google were on the "More search providers" page, you wouldn't be able to install it because of bug 353056. We could add it to that page if that bug was ever fixed, but I think I'd prefer encouraging use of "restore default engines" instead.
Have you tried clicking the restore defaults button when you click "manage search engines"?

Can't do this because of bug 353056 and 'Restore Defaults' is what you really want to use. I'd eventually like to make "deleted" app-shipped engines appear disabled in the manager rather than just disappearing, but that'll happen elsewhere.
