Seen while testing Mac build Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko/20080820020636 Minefield/3.1a2pre. STR: 1. In an empty Bugzilla comments field, type the word "verified" 2. Observe the font spacing starts to change after typing the workd "i" Hasham has reproduced this issue on his machine as well. Not seen on Windows Vista where spacing is correct. Also not a problem on Firefox 3.0.1.
The combination of the letters "i" and "f" seem to be thing that triggers this bug, as "iffy" is another example.
Summary: Irregular Font spacing when typing the word "verified" → Irregular Font spacing when typing the combo of letters "i" and "f"
Seems to be a Mac only issue. I could repro it on Leopard but not on XP. It seems to happen as Marcia said with combination of "i" and "f" such as "ff" and "fi".

This regressed between yesterday and today. Works: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko/20080819020844 Minefield/3.1a2pre Doesn't Work: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko/20080820020636 Minefield/3.1a2pre
This sounds like the regression from bug 446529, which was backed out already.
Indeed, WFM now.
