In the middle of an 8-hour download over a slow 40kbit dialup connection, the modem hung up which paused the download.
When I tried to resume it later, the modem could not establish a connection on the first attempt, so now Firefox claimed the download had "failed" and the only option now is "Retry" ---- which starts the download over from the beginning! Arrrghhh!
REQUESTED FIX:
Don't eliminate the "resume download" function just because the connection fails when a resume is attempted. Allow people to repeatedly attempt to resume, as many times as they want.
--------------
HACK to RESUME DOWNLOAD after "Download Failed":
I was able to continue the partial 4hr download only through a convoluted series of steps:
1. Make a backup copy of the incomplete 4hr *.part file
2. Delete the download that was only offering Restart as an option
3. Start a re-download the file from the original site
4. Pause the download
5. Quit firefox completely so firefox.exe exits
6. Delete the now tiny 250kb *.part created by the restarted download
7. Copy back in the incomplete 4hr *.part, giving it the original name
8. Reopen firefox, open Downloads window
9. Make sure modem is connected and click the Resume button
10. Firefox doesn't realize I have swapped out the *.part file with the previous one, and so the download now resumes at the 4hr mark so I can finish the download without restarting.
Duplicate of bug 254544.
