Please provide with us with some information:
- Thunderbird release that you are using?
- Lightning release that you are using?
- Type of calendar that this happens on?
(Local Storage, ICS/WebDAV, CalDAV, Google Calendar)
- Are there error messages in the error console?
(look at Tools -> Error Console in the menubar)
Thanks!

Wild guess: You are using the Provider for Google Calendar extension without reading the extensions FAQ and now you are trying to create a task in Google Calendar although Google doesn't support tasks?

Frankly I don't know. I downloaded the Provider to the MAC at the same time as I downloaded Thunderbird. Is there a different Provider for Thunderbird and one for Google?
thanks

Sorry to clutter up your inbox. I think I responded in the wrong place. To the questions above:
As far as I can tell I have the latest updates for both T-bird and Lightening.
The issue happens not on the Calendar (unless that is an umbrella term for both the Calendar and Tasks tabs). The Task list appears as a tab on Thunderbird. Is there something else I should be looking at?
There is no error message.
Thanks.

Julie, could you please go to the Help -> About Mozilla Thunderbird menu and copy the Thunderbird release information into this bug. It should say something like "Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.16" or something similar.
Please also tell us which add-ons you have installed. You can find this out by going to the Tools -> Add-ons menu. Please list all the extensions that you have installed here in the bug.
Thank you.
version 2.0.0.16 (20080707)
Add-ons:
Lightening .8
Provider for Google Calendar .4
Tailback 2.0.0.9

Ok, so it is as Stefan Sitter suspected in comment 2. You are trying to create tasks in a Google Calendar, which is impossible as Google does not support tasks at all. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Calendar:GDATA_Provider#Why_can.27t_I_create_tasks_on_a_Google_Calendar.3F

Can I de-couple the task function from the Google Calendar and just have a list on Thunderbird (even if it only resides locally on one computer)?
Thanks

Create a new calendar (Calendar -> New Calendar... menu). Choose "On my Computer".
When you create tasks, make sure that this new local calendar is always selected.

Summary: I have Thunderbird on MacBook Pro. The Task function will not enter tasks-when the task is entered and the "enter" key is pushed, the task disappears. I do not have this issue with Thunderbird on my PC. → when task is entered, the task disappears
