Do you store your profile on the network or on a local system ?
I'm assuming locally. Not sure what "profile" refers to. I installed the new version of Firefox and the Bookmarks and History stopped functioning.
Can you try the Firefox safemode ?

There are a lot of options, I chose the first one and no results.
I have deleted and reinstalled Firefox and am having the same issues. Any ideas???

Do you have some antivirus software on your system that could lock the Firefox files ?
Norton360 on windows is causing this for example.

The history and Bookmarks are stored in the same file and you have a problem with both.

Can you try to create a new, additional Firefox profile ?

I'm on a Mac....I haven't had any virus issues but I will say that even as I type this, the screen does a little shift up and down and my typing is much faster than letters appear. Sound like a virus to you?
I know that you are on OS X :-)
Not a Virus is the problem on windows, the Antivirus Software with some additional "privacy" functions for browsers are doing that.

There is only one thing known on OS X that is causing problems with the database, if your User profile is stored on an OS X server.
You denied that, and there is not much left to check.

A new Firefox profile would be the last chance for me to identify the problem (I'm a win32 user)

Hmmm...created new profile. Bookmarks are back...well, at least working. History looks good. Typing is very responsive...no webpage hopping going on. so do I delete the old profile?
You can use the bookmark import function in the new profile to import the bookmarks from the old one.

This can be caused by a broken Database file but this file contains all your bookmarks and browser history (privacy)
A developer should look at this file but if you don't want to send it (via email) to a developer (not me), then you can delete the old profile.

Thanks for all your help. Couldn't have figured it out without your help.

This is probably due to a corrupt places.sqlite, if you still have the old profile with places.sqlite and you are comfortable with sharing it you can attach it to this report so we can take a look at it, that file contains all of your bookmarks and history, so don't attach it if you have sensible datas in. in such a case you could send it through mail if that's not too big.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
