QuickSearch allows use of [ as shortcut, but this isn't documented .

1) Enter [test in quicksearch field
2) Edit search
-> searches status (unconfirmed, new, assigned, reopened + custom values) + summary OR whiteboard contains string test

3) Enter test in quicksearch field
4) Edit search
-> searches status (unconfirmed, new, assigned, reopened + custom values) + product OR component OR summary OR whiteboard OR comment contains string test

So, [ is a shortcut for QuickSearch, which limits search to summary or status whiteboard .

page.cgi?id=quicksearch.html nor page.cgi?id=quicksearchhack.html tells something about this feature.
