User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.0.2) Gecko/2008091620 Firefox/3.0.2
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.0.2) Gecko/2008091620 Firefox/3.0.2
If I paste in the following ftp address firefox adds a trailing slash and doesn't start to download the file.
If I jump to the containing ftp directory and click on the file the same behaviour is shown.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. open the browser
2. enter ftp address: ftp://ftp.scansoft.com/products/realspeak/ena_lee.wav
3. you get in the addressbar: ftp://ftp.scansoft.com/products/realspeak/ena_lee.wav/
Actual Results:
ftp download doesn't start
Expected Results:
just download the file I requested
Sorry I have not found the bug category for network / ftp errors.
Bug might be already there, but i have not found a specifc entry to this error.

Works for me - why should add Firefox an extra / to the URL ? That only happens when the FTP server indicates that the file is really a directory, like for instance <ftp://ftp.scansoft.com/products/realspeak>

I have tried it again and it doesn't work for me.
I have checkt with a filezilla if the file I requested was marked as directory; it was not the case.
But I also have experienced a different behaviour.
1. if I enter the file, the slash (2) have been added;
2. Now when I reload the page or hit enter in the urlbar the file download starts, as "application/octet-stream but is not correctly handled on my system.
Might be my fault / systems fault.

This works fine for me with Firefox 3.0.3 on Windows XP. I have a file ena_lee.wav on my desktop now.

Okay, I have also upgraded to FF 3.0.3 and it works now too for me.
Fine, seems the upgrade have done the trick.
Maybe receck later, but the "bug" seems to be resolved.

Still problematic with authenticated FTP download with Firefox 3.0.4. Check out this site:
<http://www.vega-info.fr/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=3>
Then click on "Cliquer ici pour télécharger la version Complète (Installation ou mise à jour des versions 6 à 10)"
Notice directly entering the URL (<ftp://majvega@maj.vega-net.net/FullV11B12.exe>) WILL be OK. Only clicking on it won't
To make matter worse, this is not reproductible. Sometimes it works OK, sometimes, it doesn't.
Today, it doesn't work with Firefox 3.0.4 but it DOES work with Opera 9.61 (I never tried before with Opera; I assume it always work with this brower)

David, both URLs give the "authentication required" message. Please make sure that your firewall is configured correctly. My firewall prompts in both cases before showing the dialog.

Sorry about the authentification - forgot about it.
I cannot give it openly and I cannot create a temporary account neither (this is my company's password). What I can do is send you the login/password information privately. Just ask and I'll send it (Florian and Ria, this is already done)
Does anyone know how to reapon the bug? If no one knows, I'll open a new bug and say that it is an extention of this one.

I think I found a reliable way to reproduce the bug
1. If you never came to the <http://www.vega-info.fr/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=3> address, downloading the file should be no problem. The site will ask for password and this will be done.
2. If you already came to the aforementionned address and clicked on the link (whether you actually started the download or not), then you will get the wrong address.
_Emptying the cache_ resets the problem.
So, the issue seems to be cache-related.

There is no problem for me (tested without any proxy at all). I tested with an empty cache and went to the URL : I was asked for the password. After it was downloaded (23.5 MB large), I went to the URL again, and I was asked for the password again.
Note that the file was not present in the cache at all (verified in about:config), and the second download lasted as long as the first one.
I think you have a webproxy in operation that attempts to cache the FTP download, and makes a mistake in the process.
Later tonight I'll try to repeat the test with a proxy server at my work place, but I'll have to play Sinterklaas this afternoon for some kids <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas>. Really.

Several of our customers, as well as myself (on both Windows and Mac versions of Opera) suffer the same problem, but we all are located in France (that may or may not be an issue). I can't say if any proxy are active.

Hi, I have tried it also once again.
I can download the file even without entering a password. (I can reproduce this)
This is, as I guess, not desired. So may be the server is missconfigured (too).

I don't know why I got an e-mail for this from David Latapie on my spreadthunderbird bugmail account (it exists so i get a e-mail of every bug posted on bugzilla, and thus can search bugs), but this might be important? I doubt it's confidential because apparently it was mailed, unsolicited, to every e-mail address that happens to watch bugs (even if not CC'd):
Hi,
I'm sending this mail to everyone who got a notification from the Mozilla Bugzilla bugtracker about this bug
Here are the login and password to check bug mentioned here <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=457519#c5>

Hi,
Could you remove the login and password from your message?

This is a mass search for bugs which are in the Firefox General component, are
UNCO, have not been changed for 500 days and have an unspecified version.
Reporter, can you please update to Firefox 3.6.10 or later, create a fresh profile, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/managing+profiles, and test again. If you still see the issue, please update this bug. If the issue is gone, please set the status to RESOLVED > WORKSFORME.
