Ok, filing this bug as a follow-up by advice of dmose on bug 13595.
Its great that a birthday field is available now. Even that we have a synchronization with the OS X address book entries.
But at least I'm a bit concerned about the usability of this control. IMO it's not really handy. Why don't we use a simple text field with dots as separators? The best solution I've found so far is the way how Apple implemented this on OS X (attachment 343664 [details]).
Seeing the birthday date as a whole string and not divided into two different text fields is more like how you would write a birthday in real life. Even when you want to copy the whole string you can't do that.

just noting that bug 13595 Comment #91 and further has some of the rationale for the design of this control and why it's better than a full date chooser

Henrik, how does the current patch for Bug 456024 look? The datepicker and card view pane (the bottom part of the address book window) will detect your system's short date format.

I don't patch my Thunderbird. So a screenshot would be helpful.
Henrik, I think the entry field should allow the partial date definition, in case when the user does not know the birth year. Like "24.09" or "24 Sep". Separation of fields allow this partial date presentation for sure, while for single field this may vary.
