User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 I manually delete search engines, and they reappear in next session. These search engines are EBay, Amazon, Creative Commons, Answers.com and Yahoo. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open "Manage Search Engines" 2.Select engines and press "Remove" or Del button on keyboard 3.Click "OK", but they appear again Expected Results: Mozilla 2.x did not have this problem and I was confused to see this now. I am using NASA Night Launch dark theme.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 I tested this but was not able to reproduce the problem.
Could you set the javascript.options.showInConsole preference to true using about:config (see http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config for help if you're not familiar with it), and then see if any errors appear in the Error Console when you reproduce the bug?
I enabled Javascript options, but do not get any result when I delete the search engines, jusr errors from websites.
OK, next step would be to try capturing the search service's debug output. This involves setting the browser.search.log preference to true as you did with javascript.options.showInConsole, restarting Firefox, and then either looking at the Error Console output or stdout. If you could capture all of the output and attach it here that'd be great.
I'm doing like you asked me. I copied (one by one) fields from Error Console log where there are 2 engines (Amazon and Answers) missing (I deleted them), and then they are added again. There are more, unfortunately I can't do it all right now. Thanks for your patience.
So just to be clear, do the engines disappear from the list when you press OK, but re-appear after a restart? Or do they never disappear from the list when you press OK? Assuming it's the latter, the relevant Error Console entries should appear after pressing "OK". The ones you just provided just indicate a normal loading of search plugins after a restart.

Just to be clear, :-) I delete the engines using remove or Del button on the keyboard, press OK, and they're gone. After that, when I have closed and started Firefox again, they're back again. I'm sending another .txt document. I have just deleted them again, and will copy the entries I get under "Messages" in the Error Console.
Well, boys and girls, since my last post I reinstalled my Windows XP twice (including reinstalling Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5 twice) and the same problem appears. Happy New Year to everyone :-)
Salec, is it still a problem with Firefox 3.5.2? If yes, can you please run a test in another profile (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles)? I believe you have taken over your old one while reinstalling the OS. Would be good to know if it starts in a new profile.

Thank you for showing interest. I haven't yet tried the option with the new profile, but I actually deleted the search engines yesterday, so I'll follow up with results in a few days.

Hello, I've been meaning to write a few words, but couldn't find the time. I'm happy to say that I don't have the problem anymore; I don't know what solved it, but I stopped having it since v.3.5.3, and now I'm using v.3.5.4 Thank you again for your interest.

I can reproduce this, It's happened to me at least a dozen times now. Seemingly randomly upon restarting firefox (but not every time). Only "Amazon" and "Ebay" re-appear, whereas other defaults I have deleted (Bing and Twitter) do not re-appear. The only unusual preferences I have that might be relevant is "Always use private browsing mode" enabled. This is on Linux 64bit.
