Build Identifier: 3.0.5

Very often when reading the New York Times web site, Firefox crashes. Not always in the same place; I usually can reread the area I was in and it will not fail. It fails while reading, and also while I am in another window. Also, and perhaps connected, CLear private data does not work, neither CTRL-SHIFT-DEL nor clicking in the Tools box. Internet Explorer does not fail while reading the Times.

On another computer, supposedly the same softwared, clear private data does work. I rarely read the NYTimes on that machine, so I don't know if it has the same problem.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Read NY Times and go from article to article. Times between failures are variable.
2.
3.
In the Firefox that is crashing please type about:crashes in the address bar. If there are any entries please copy and paste them into this bug. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Mozilla+Crash+Reporter#Viewing_crash_reports
Severity: normal → critical
Yesterday I spent a lot of time reading the New York Times Sunday Magazine. Not one failure. Today I went back to the newspaper, and there quickly was a failure. About:crashes yielded:

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.
And here is one page that I have been unsuccessful in reading four consecutive times:

That stuff is usually useless, especially after already viewing the crash reports themselves.
Possible fix -- I have been using Internet Explorer because of this problem with Firefox. And I got a failure, with a message that the problem was in Adobe Flash. So I reinstalled Flash (I did not remember to check if it was a later version than the one I had), and, at least for the last hour, the problem is gone. I still am not closing this until I have a little more experience.
I spoke too soon. It did crash again. Here is the link to the report

378f91d1-f776-41be-9b51-ee2fb2090112	1/12/2009	8:22 PM
I updated to 3.0.6 but it seems to have made the problem worse.
So far I cannot reproduce this issue. I have tried FF 3.0.5 with Flash Player 10 and no crashes after looking at various articles for maybe 5 minutes. A few questions:

1) Are you looking at video?
2) Have you tried to clean out temp and browser cache files?
3) What player version does your system have?
1) Not usually.
2) I think that I tried it, but I will try it again.
3) Windows XP Service Pack II, Firefox 3.0.6 and Flash Player 10.

Oddly enough, today it hasn't crashed once; yesterday several times. There have been no software changes in the interim.

Reporter, can you please update if you can reproduce in the latest nightly

Whiteboard: [closeme 2010-03-31]
I have gone to the above address, and see a directory of many files. But I don't know what to do. Therefore I have not checked out the new release. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with all the latest high priority fixes.

By the way, the problem continues with all Firefoxes up to and including 3.6.2. I have found that it is connected to Shockwave Flash 10.45.2. I disable Flash when reading the New York Times, and have no problems. When there is something that I want to see, I enable it and then turn if off as soon as I no longer need it.
Larry would you be willing to try Flash Player 10.1 beta?

The beta Flash Player 10.1 did not help. Purely subjectively, maybe it decreased the frequency of failures, but I am not sure.

Incidentally, I still can not figure out how to get the latest Firefox nightly.
you want to grab an installer (.exe).

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.7a4pre.en-US.win32.installer.exe

this link will be correct until we switch to 3.7a5pre ....
We have a Release Candidate posted as of Monday night 4/5 please try that build if you downloaded before Monday.
I haven't tried the Firefox, but I tried the latest flash. It seemed much improved. It did not crash UNTIL I tried to view a video.
Crashing is a video sounds like a different bug. I am happy to hear the stability has improved. Its likely we fixed your initial issue and would recommend logging a separate bug but in the Adobe Flash Player bug database.
