On Linux (but reportedly not on Windows) the caret is invisible in any contenteditable region unless you zoom the page in by several steps. This happens in trunk builds but not in 3.0.x. I'm not sure why the patch in bug 420987 didn't cover this, but it definitely doesn't.
I currently cannot reproduce it. Do you still see the bug on trunk ?
No, it seems to be fixed now.
