In the river view, it should be possible to bookmark a message by clicking a star checkbox next to it.

Yes, that's a very good idea!

It would be also very nice to not only have the opportunity to add a message to the bookmarks, it would be a good feature to have a button/star checkbox to add the message to the "Read It Later" list (great addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7661)

Yes, I agree, that'd be great.  However, I think that's the kind of thing it would make the most sense for the Read It Later addon to implement as an extension to Snowl's river view.  But there may be some work we should do in Snowl that'd make it easier to extend it in that manner.
