A new Firefox profile includes a link to the "Getting started" page on the Bookmarks toolbar. The objective of this page is to provide the users with a few task-based starting points. They could use them to enjoy the web and discover sites that will help them get the most out of Firefox, and the Internet in general. This page will be aimed towards beginning and intermediate Web users. We want to promote community/user oriented collaborative sites with good user experience in your region and language, and good standards support.

The current en-US defaults for this page are:
 The 'Work' category: Google Docs, Remember the Milk, LinkedIn, Clipmarks Add-on
 The 'Learn' category: Wikipedia, Topix, HowStuffWorks.com, Answers Add-on
 The 'Play' category: YouTube, Hype Machine, Miro, PicLens Add-on
 The 'Connect' category: Criagslist, Yelp, Facebook, Me.dium Add-on

(See the en-US page at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/central/.)

We would like to provide a good set of links on this page for our Malayalam users.

First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for your language and come up with a good candidates. Ani, we'll need your input on this, of course. The guidelines for making recommendations are on https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines.

Second, once we have a good list of candidates, your localization team will localize the 'Getting Started' index.html file which can be found here: http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.com/trunk/en-US/firefox/central/index.html?revision=18714&content-type=text%2Fplain changing the en-US default as agreed in the first step.

The logos should be named sites-<sitename>.png and should be 110px wide and 65px high on white or transparent background. Stas can help on getting the logos from the website owners.

The localized index.html and the logos should be then attached in a ZIP archive to this bug, and a review should be requested from Stas (stas@mozilla.com) and Pascal (pascalc@gmail.com). Once the review have been granted, Pascal will take over to push the localized page on the server.

Thank you.

There was a a paragraph change on this page since this bug was filed, the updated reference file for your localization is:

Hi Ani and Joyce:

Have you been able to do any more research for the Getting Started page? We are hoping to finish this bug as we close in on the Firefox 3.5 release. Doing so will help us move Malayalam version of Firefox out of beta and into official status.

As a point of reference, the current en-US defaults for this page are:

1)  The 'Work' category: Google Docs, Remember the Milk, LinkedIn, and the Clipmarks Add-on;
2)  The 'Learn' category: Wikipedia, Topix, HowStuffWorks.com, and the Answers Add-on;
3)  The 'Play' category: YouTube, Hype Machine, Miro, and the PicLens Add-on;
4) The 'Connect' category: Criagslist, Yelp, Facebook, and the Shareholic Add-on. (Note, Shareholic is a new change from comment #1).

Do you have any recommendations?
Have forwarded mail to our malayalam community and waiting for the response.
Here is a short list of websites that may be useful for beginners.

1. http://ml.wikipedia.org
2. http://wiki.smc.org.in - There are several articles and documentation on how to use FLOSS based language tools)
3. http://urjasamrakshanam.org - This portal is a web portal dedicated for evergy conservation

May be we can include News websites - eg. http://mangalam.com and http://mathrubhumi.com (AFAIK, only these two sites supports unicode), but I'm not sure to which category they will fit in.

Addons:
1. Swanalekha - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11203
2. Google Indic Transliteration - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefoxaddon/8731
3. Padma - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/873
4. fix-ml - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7289
5. MallusTube - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10803
6. Lipikar - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6593
7. Indic Input Extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3972
Play
1. Youtube
2. Cooltoad http://www.cooltoad.com/
3. Miro

Connect

3. Orkut http://www.cooltoad.com/ (Orkut is more popular than facebook)

Learn (same suggestions as Manilal)

1. Malayalam Wikipedia ml.wikipedia.org
2. http://wiki.smc.org.in - There are several articles and documentation on how
to use FLOSS based language tools)
3. http://urjasamrakshanam.org - This portal is a web portal dedicated for
evergy conservation

Can we have a separate section for News? Malayalees are very much interested in news.
I think that news could be put in the 'Learn' category, what do you think of it?

can you provide a first translation of the document with your suggestions and attach it to the bug ? Thanks
Translated getting started web page
thanks Ashik,

Here is the page:
https://ml.www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/ml/firefox/central/#feature-connect

Those of you with an LDAP account can see it. For those who don't have an account I posted screenshots here:

The page is now on svn, so any update should be done based on the latest version of the file on svn and not the attachment of this bug :
http://svn.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla.com/trunk/ml/firefox/central/index.html

A few comments:

The page title is not translated, it is this line on top:
$page_title = 'Getting Started with Firefox';

There are some missing addons logos, I will add them soon.

The Connect tab is really too empty, we need 3 sites there.
I have uploaded the logo and added image tags for them.

One more thing, the Swanalekha add-on is not compatible with 3.5, only 3.0, are you in contact with the author of this extension to ask him to update it?
Logos updated and text as well, as for Swanalekha, the author knows about it and should update his extension when 3.5 is released, if he doesn't, I will hide it. marking fixed.

Can we replace Mangalam in 'learn' with Google News http://news.google.co.in/news?ned=ml_in ?

We can do this, but I don't think that the UI is so repetitive that it would benefit people to see a different news source in the "Learn" section. If Mangalam is the more relevant of the two news sources, then I suggest leaving it in both the RSS live bookmarks section and the Learn section on the Getting Started page.

Please let me know what you think of my response to your idea.
Seth, thanks for your reply. I understand that Google News contains a huge collection of news and hence community also would love to see Mangalam in Learn section replaced with Google News. Appreciate if you could help us to get this done :)
