User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2) Gecko/20081201 Firefox/3.1b2
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2) Gecko/20081201 Firefox/3.1b2
Whenever I copy text from a site in Firefox 3.1 beta 2, and paste it into any other application, non-english characters (or even some blank characters in english) appear broken. For example, copying the word "policía" from a spanish newspaper site gives me: "policÃa".
This does not happen when I copy from other browsers such as Safari, or Firefox 3 (stable build). It also does not happen when you paste the text into a Firefox input or textfield.
Also, other metadata such as font type or size is not kept when pasting.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Browse to any UTF-8 encoded page and copy text with non-english characters (for example, www.elpais.es, a Spanish newspaper, look for á, í, é, ó, ú, ñ... etc)
2. Paste the text into another application, for example TextEdit (or whatever other editor or textfield in any program). ***
3. If all goes as planned, the encoding will miss and paste garbage.
*** Pasting the text again into Firefox works correctly, you can check that pasting the same text in the search bar or the url bar.
Actual Results:
I copied the following text:
"Sus directivos cobrarán un máximo de 500.000 $.- El presidente dice que el actual sistema de retribuciones "es de mal gusto y además una mala estrategia"
When I pasted it in TextEdit, it gave me:
"Sus directivos cobrarán un máximo de 500.000 $.- El presidente dice que el actual sistema de retribuciones "es de mal gusto y además una mala estrategia"
Expected Results:
It should have pasted the characters correctly
Using Firefox 3.1 beta 2 universal build in x86, this does not happen in the stable build for Mac OS X. OS: mac os x 10.5.6

This is bug 428096, which is fixed in recent Shiretoko (FF 3.1, aka 1.9.1-branch) and Minefield (trunk, aka mozilla-central) nightlies.
The encoding issue is either a duplicate or a regression of bug 466599.
I guess if I want to find out I'll need to download FF 3.5.
