User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011912 Firefox/3.0.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011912 Firefox/3.0.6 Web forms may contain text fields for uploading files. Browsing in the File selector box is often inconvenient. For huge directories graphical file selectors freeze the Desktop for a significant time. Therefore many users prefer to type the file path directly rather than using the file selector. This is obvious from the large number of votes for https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374011 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461966 I suggest implementation of file path completion with the Tab-key. This feature is already standard in Unix applications and enhance the user experience. Reproducible: Always

Where, exactly, are you proposing that we add tab completion? We can't add it to the GTK file picker because we can't control it. And we can't add it to the Mac file picker because it already has tab completion.

The upload-a-file fields in Web sites like http://ekhidna.biocenter.helsinki.fi/dali_server/ Assume a file path if content.trim() starts like an absolute path i.e. starts with a drive letter colon slash or with a slash or with file:/ or with tilde. In this case tab or M-/ could expand the file path. As tab usually sets focus to next, one could also use M-/ (emacs key binding). People try to avoid the GTK file selector because it has nasty performance bugs for directories with many files, freezing the program for quite some time. This feature would allow to conveniently type file names directly without GUI file selector. Less keystrokes, no mouse-click, faster, higher productivity.

Hmm, so I guess you want file upload controls to have two buttons, "Choose file..." and "Enter path..."? Where "Enter path" opens a dialog that lets you paste, use tab completion, etc?

No, sorry, I was not clear enough. <input type="file" name="theName" size="40" /> In firefox 2 one can type or copy directly into this text field. I suggest to restore this feature and as an enhancement to add path completion on tab key. For html pages with file upload my colleagues and me we used to type the path in an xterm using the path completion of the shell prompt and then copying the path form the xterm into the text field. This is much more efficient than traversing through the graphical file browser with the mouse. To have the path completion feature directly in the input field would be even more convenient.

In that case, I think this is a dup of bug 374011.

I see, if direct text typing into <input type="file" /> was not possible due to security issues, then of course my suggestion for enhancement could not be implemented. I have not realized the security problem because I assumed that this type="file" fields would not have write access for scripts and DOM. Maybe the solution is to use another browser for Web sites with file upload. What about suggesting an Opera, IE and Konquerer tool button in Firefox to facilitate the opening of the Web site in these browsers.

It's not really a dup of bug 374011 but it's is depending on it and that bug isn't going to be fixed so so does this. (In reply to christoph gille from comment #6) > Maybe the solution is to use another browser for Web sites with file upload. > What about suggesting an Opera, IE and Konquerer tool button in Firefox > to facilitate the opening of the Web site in these browsers. I hope you realised, four year later, that you were wrong by being sarcastic: every browser is doing the same as Firefox.
Depends on: 374011

So--does this resolve full filepath display error for the text which is located on the tab or for the text which is located in the tooltip when you hover over the tab in a Firefox window?
