We can fight spam by adding recaptcha to appropriate forms, such as the Contact Us form. The question is, which forms are appropriate?
We should have it for anything that creates content on the site (group creation, posts to groups and forums), esp. if we enable email notifications again since it should help with spam. Contact us form would be nice too, although most of the spam sfx-admins gets it from emails sent to admin at spreadfirefox.com since it was the "from" for all download day emails and all sfx emails. It's optional for user registration.
Agreed. I think anything that generates content (groups, events, comments, discussions, etc), plus user registration. Also, logged in users should have to use recaptcha also (why? because spammers are smart enough to create one user account and use that to send lots of spam). Also, email forms definitely. links to pages with forms would be a HUGE help, that is if anyone has time to dig through the site and find such forms.
Hey guys: I think we only need it on the registration form since we need to log in to post anything and on the contact form since it allows notes from anonymous users. I think that it on forms that would need it.
I have added a recpatcha on the user registration page You can configure captcha here .. https://spreadfirefox.authstage.mozilla.com/admin/user/captcha

Buchanan - Do you have this one? Again, for now it will be registration and the contact us form.

To summarize discussions that happened outside of this bug, we're going to put recaptcha on the Contact Us form, and the new user registration form only for now. If we have spam problems, we'll explore adding recaptcha to new post/comment forms.
I changed the settings to reflect this. Also, the Tell A Friend form has a captcha because it is open to the public (anonymous users), and it was an existing setting. Recaptcha should exist now on /user/register (logged out) /contact-us /tellafriend
