In Firefox 3.1, "Clear Private Data" is now "Clear Recent History", and the layout/functionality of the feature has changed to allow removing based on timestamp.
I'll add a couple of screenshots to this bug.

Here we go. I borrowed liberally from the existing Clearing Private Data article and the new Private Browsing article. If you want to sprinkle in more references to Private Browsing, go for it - I mentioned it in the intro, but we could push it elsewhere.
Not marking this fixed yet, since it definitely needs screenshots.

Don't worry about screenshots. When we get the go ahead, we'll go through the entire KB.

I was looking at this and thought that the references to Private data seemed confusing for a window/article called "Clear Recent History". So I wondered if there were any bugs to change the button label.
I came across bug 480169, which appears to be another redesign of that window. Alex, should we hold off on doing this article until that bug is fixed?

It isn't clear if the changes will make it in time for Shiretoko, but if you want to hold off on the article to make sure you don't have to change it again, you might want to wait to see if the changes do in fact land in time.

Thanks. I'm adding a dependency for now. This article can afford to wait.
Depends on: 480169

I updated the article to match the 3.5 nightlies. There is new terminology (e.g. "private data" becomes "history," see Bug 464204) and there are some new features (e.g. clearing site zoom )
I imagine the "Clear history when Firefox exits" Settings window will change again, since it no longer matches the Clear Recent history window's terminology. I presume there's a bug for this somewhere, since there are a couple still open for similar issues.

- I'm wrestling with this one: should we list the details first (how it is now), or list them when we arrive at the step to click on "Details"?
- Can we confirm what is part of "site preference"? (Alex?)
- Does "today" include all hours for that calendar day, even after clicking on "Clear Now"?

cc'ing adw since he did the implementation.
>- I'm wrestling with this one: should we list the details first (how it is

The details are all implementation centric, and probably only interesting to a very limited subset of our user population, so I would suggest the article should start with the general use case (clearing all history for a specific time range).
>- Can we confirm what is part of "site preference"? (Alex?)
I believe this contains things like what style sheet you want to use, your zoom preferences, if you asked for images not to be displayed, etc. Probably someone on the front end team can give you a complete list of what the site preferences are.
>- Does "today" include all hours for that calendar day, even after clicking on
>"Clear Now"?
I'm actually not sure

Yes, whether or not you've clicked "Clear Now" that day is irrelevant.
There's some debate about this dialog now, so I'll mark those bugs as dependencies. I'm not 100% sure whether they'll end up affecting your article, but they might.

Moved to KB at:
Tue 05 of May, 2009 23:43 EST
I decided to leave the "What is history?" section where it is. I figure if someone's willing to look at a user-doc for this, that's most likely the info they're looking for.
I also ran into a website bug regarding classifying content for Firefox 2 and 3.0. So the warning at the beginning of the article will display for 3.5 users until the bug is fixed. Filed bug 491641.
