Protocol handlers are a new feature in Firefox 3.5 that allows links like mailto:nobody@mozilla.org to be handled by a webmail application. In order to do that, the site needs to support a special API described on http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web-based_protocol_handlers. For en-US, we're currently shipping with GMail and Yahoo! Mail for mailto: and 30boxes for webcal: urls, and we're on a ongoing evangelism effort to add more. We're going to add support for irc links to mibbit.com soon. For Croatian, we'd like to do that, too. First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good candidates. Ante, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. Following that is a reach out by the evangelism team to try to get the vendor to support protocol handlers. Once that happens, Stas will take over in reviewing the actual implementation, which will need to change the gecko.handlerService.* entries in hr/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties. Please don't make changes to that file without getting a positive review by Stas or somebody else appointed by Stas/Sethb on a patch for that change upfront.
GMail and Yahoo! Mail are quite popular in Croatia too. There is also freemail.net.hr, the most popular local webmail (it supports connecting to other POP3 servers). There are others too, of course...

Ante, Thanks for this information. So, to clarify, you recommend Gmail, Yahoo!, and freemail.net.hr? We might consider reducing that number to two. If so, which two mail services are best? Do you recommend any webcal handlers? Additionally, in Firefox 3.5, we will support Mibbit as the irc handler. Does that seem ok to you? Please advise. And, feel free to revisit the Web Services Guidelines for reference. http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines
3 mailto handlers is fine, in fact. Let me try to contact freemail.net.hr about the implementation on their side.
E-mail sent to urednik@portal.net.hr. Ante, any thoughts on webcal and irc handlers? And, if there any other popular webmail providers, let's try to include them, too :)
There's T-com's webmail: https://komunikator.tportal.hr/komunikator/ (contact: urednik _at_ t-com.hr) CARNet (Croatian Academic and Research Network) developed AIEDU system (single sign on for various services offered by academic institutions. They also have webmail for that: https://webmail.carnet.hr/ Optima webmail: http://www.optima.hr (contact: info _at_ optima-telekom.hr) Metronet webmail: http://webmail.vodatel.hr/ (contact: info _at_ metronet.hr) No webcal and irc handlers in Croatia :/
Ante, Do you think that CARNet, Optima, or Metronet are as popular than any of the others we've listed? (Freemail, Yahoo Mail, Gmail) We can request to include all of these services if you recommend it. I have no idea, but wonder how popular a service like CARNet would be because it is so specific to the Croation Academic and Research Network. Please advise what you think is best. Any research that is available would be helpful. (i.e. number of users, growth rate, market share...stuff like that.) :) Like I said, we can go with all of them, but it's really up to your expert advice as our local contact. If we want to make a shorter list, that is fine, too. Keep in mind that the Hotmail protocol handler will land sometime in the future. (We're still waiting on that one across all localizations.)
Gmail, Yahoo, T-Com and Freemail (in that order). Others are irrelevant. Gmail, Yahoo and Freemail are available to everybody, while T-Com offers email only to its customers. But, since T-Com has more than 60% of market share, it should be included. I'm sure we can't miss with this selection.
Thanks Ante. Email sent to T-Com. Still no news from freemail.
I'll try pulling some strings to get to the owner/editor/someone on Freemail. On forums their email addresses appear to be most common.
I've pushed the email to Freemail stuff, but I got no response. I guess they aren't interested. Too bad, their loss.
Ante, do you mind if we close this bug? I guess we can go with the en-US defaults. If in the future we hear from T-Com and Freemail, let's open new bugs for including them.
