We want to ship Firefox 3.5 a good list of search engines for Spanish (Mexico).

We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Ricardo, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines.

For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives:
Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Answers, CC, eBay, Wikipedia

After we decided on a particular search engine, Stas will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. undefined, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information.

Once we have a specification on what the searchengines for Spanish (Mexico) should look like, the localization team and Stas will work on an implementation on that. This should happen by the localization team creating and attaching patches for the desired changes, and requesting review from Stas. After a successful review, the localization team will land them.

Please don't commit any modifications in l10n/es-MX/browser/searchplugins to the cvs repository without a patch reviewed by Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by Stas or SethB. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.

Hi Ricardo: Any progress here? We would love to have you participate as a beta in FF 3.5 beta 4 and will need to provide recommended search plugins for es-MX to ensure participation. Please let us know. Thanks!
Hi.

These are the searchengines for es-MX:

*Generic
 -Google (http://www.google.com.mx/)
 -Yahoo (http://mx.yahoo.com/)

*e-Commerce[1]
 -Mercado Libre (http://www.mercadolibre.com.mx/)
 -Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/[2]

*Specific interest[3]
 -Wikipedia (http://es.wikipedia.org/)

[1]In the case of the e-Commerce category, Ebay redirects you to the mercadolibre.com.mx website when you click on the "Mexico" link at bottom of the index website.
[2]Many people from Mexico buy in this website.
[3]There is no a translated version of the Answers/Ask websites to the Spanish language.
Thanks, Ricardo. If there is not a translated version of Answers/Ask for Mexican users, do you think we can put Creative Commons in there? Just trying to get another specific interest search engine for your version. Please pass along other ideas if you have them.

Next step will be for Stas or me to contact Mercado Libre to verify that they are ok with us including them in the upcoming es-MX version. If you are able to find the best contact for us to confirm that this is OK, that would be great. We typically try to connect with someone in the the Business Development or Business Affairs department. If you find a good contact, please pass it along in this bug.
Ho yea, we can include CreativeCommons.

I'm searching a contacto in MercadoLibre...
OK, final list will be

Generic
+ Google (http://www.google.com.mx/)
+ Yahoo (http://mx.yahoo.com/)

e-commerce
+ Mercado Libre (http://www.mercadolibre.com.mx/)
+ Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/

Specific interest
+ Wikipedia (http://es.wikipedia.org/)
+ Creative Commons

Please send us the Mercado Libre contact. If you cannot find us, please also let us know so we can try to find them.
Somebody gave me this info, I called to her but maybe she is out of office:
Fayne Loya +525510552100 ext 126
Perhaps Juan B can help here, too. Juan B, would you be willing to call Fayne Loya tomorrow since you would be able to chat quickly and without any problems. We just need to confirm that Mercado Libre is ok with us shipping them as a search engine in the es-MX version of Firefox.
I called the number above in three occasions, but no one picks up. There's no option to leave a message, either. Asa mentioned he may have other contacts' information, so we'll ask him and try again.
E-mail sent to Mercado Libre to Martin Gallone <gallomar@mercadolibre.com> (our es-AR contact).
Here's a patch that we could use. Ricardo, do you mind if I land it? I just want
to make sure we have this in before the code freeze and that es-MX opts in for
beta4 with the correct revision number.

Do we still want to block on Mercado Libre?

Also, I think we should be in better shape these days to actually land that, Stas?
No need to block on Mercado Libre, we now have the permission and the parameters for the search plugin. Pike, forwarded the email to you, could you update this bug with the search codes to use for ML in Mexico?

Thanks!
