User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009021910 Firefox/3.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009021910 Firefox/3.0.7

I use the "classic" of yahoo mail, which was revamped slightly about a week ago.

Now, when clicking on checking mail, instead of showing activity using the Fox Circling Icon, in the upper right, Yahoo generates a "LOADING" notation at the top of its window.

In and of itself, that is not bad. This new method, however, causes Fox to focus 100% of its effort on whatever is going on [javascript...???] for 7+ seconds, so that you can't even get to another tab. Even if I switch tabs, while yahoo's new system is doing its thing, I am blocked from scrolling, clicking -- everything. The problem is slightly amplified if my internet connection slows.

I'm not sure if this is a "bug" in the standard sense. It seems that Fox shouldn't have a situation where one URL locks up like this; and I wonder if Yahoo even realizes it.

Note: I have a second email account, in 'classic' mode, and that version of the classic was -not- changed.
Note: This new version of the 'classic' also wound in a Yahoo i.m.; annoying since i don't use Fox for yahoo's i.m., and i am bombarded every now/then with a spam message. Not a FireFox issue, but i do wonder if the i.m. polling has something to do with what is going on...

Wondering if a contact to Yahoo might be worthy to see what is going on.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on yahoo mail classic button: "Check Mail"
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Time delay of 7+ seconds

Expected Results:
no delay
I have same problem with 3.5.6, and ff does this even while yahoo mail is not running. yahoo web mail uses java and keeps open socket connections all the time, so it is always in communication with the yahoo server from what I have observed.

firefox seems to spike the cpu regularly for no reason at all, sometimes for 5 seconds at 100%. this is so unacceptable. I am submitting a bug report under "firefox spikes cpu regularly for up to 5-10 seconds"

but yahoo mail is particularly slow to respond on my machine (probably because of large Java applet).
2.8Ghz Pentium 4 HT (thinks it's a dual-core) with 3GB RAM.
is it better or worse with a trunk build?

Summary: Odd delay while Yahoo retrieves mail → Odd delay while Yahoo retrieves mail (slow)
before I use the trunk, I should say that I think the delay is caused by the fact that
- yahoo mail is a huge java applet I think
- yahoo mail keeps a connection open to its servers and communicates continuously on it, especially when you do something.
- delays may be caused by the network lag.
- yahoo maintains their own email application, thus it is continually changing
- whatever problems there were seem fixed or normalized by now.

If I mess with trunk, is it going to permanently upgrade my profile and bookmarks system so I can't go back to 3.6.3 from 3.7a?

how do I back up my profile? make a copy of what's in appdata and do a backup of my bookmarks? or is what's in appdata enough to do it all?

you can go back to 3.6

google "firefox profile backup" and choose what makes most sense for you.

If reporter, John, doesn't reply then this bug will probably be closed.
The delay, for me, still exists. I can not say decisively, but it seems delayed, but not so much so, right now. Of course, I can not attribute it to Fox, but I use 3.6.3, still.
Whiteboard: [needs trunk test]
I should point out that the artifact, of the delay, exists in the current version of Fox. Also, I use Yahoo Classic, not the Java based version. Can't say how much of the Yahoo class is driven by client side scripts, versus server side.

I also notice [and I am not sure if this is a Javascript issue, or detection of connection delays by the Yahoo mail server] that sometimes while there is a loading sign, it [the 'loading' notice] disappears even though the look-back to yahoo's mail server does not 'complete' -- ie. even though there -is- mail, no mail shows. Again, almost as if the connection times, communications times, or general delays, make yahoo server disconnect somehow and releasing the "loading" notice -- and there I am not sure if this is a Yahoo issue, or the way that Fox responds to the Yahoo mail.

Since the original report, by me, I am using the now current Fox, on a new machine [ergo new profile and etc.] on Win 7-64, in lieu of the original reported WinXP. My faster, newer machine, may reduce some internals lags, obviously.

This artifact seems to be connection quality dependent.

Is this something that a Moz/Fox person can raise with friends inside Yahoo/Mail [just a thought....]
Reporter, are you still seeing this issue with Firefox 4.0.1 or later in safe mode or a fresh profile? If not, please close. These links can help you in your testing.
