Search using yahoo.co.jp with Minefield, Shiretoko, SeaMonkey or Camino (with a UA string that does not contain 'firefox') Result: the search result page is served with minimal styling, the 'yahoo bar' is missing at the top, etc. Expected: the normal search result page, as served to Firefox 3.0.x. ---- As far as I can tell, this only happens with Yahoo Japan.

On the left: a stock Camino nightly (contains 'firefox' in the UA string). On the right: same page with latest the Minefield build

Kev, as with other Yahoo issues, care to drop them a note ? Thanks.

I assume this is a problem on more than just Intel Macs, so platform/OS -> All/All.
OS: Mac OS X → All
Hardware: x86 → All

I'll ask Mozilla Japan to reach out to the Y! JAPAN team. They're separate from corp, and I believe Kohei knows a number of folks there. Kohei, could you reach out to Y! JAPAN and see if they can change their detection routine so that they key on the engine rather than the product? As an aside, we could use some kind of guideline doc on MDC that outlines how site developers should detect gecko when using browser detection routines. If any such beast exists already, please let me know (even if they're rough, I can pretty 'em up).

Kev: http://www.geckoisgecko.info/ has a lot of good information. Smokey, you can probably help out here, too...where's that page you've been working on?

If > any such beast exists already, please let me know (even if they're rough, I can > pretty 'em up). http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Browser_Detection_and_Cross_Browser_Support is the existing documentation on MDC about this; it dates from 2003 and is really, really dated. It spends too much time talking about Netscape 4 and too much time talking about sniffing for specific Gecko build-dates (Yahoo! needs no help with that :P ) and so forth. The one plus is that it has a "quick tip" at the top with the code for sniffing for just Gecko, though said code is dated and therefor doesn't account for WebKit-based browsers :P I've been working off-and-on on a new framework for the page that tries to order things appropriately and dispense with the page-plus of history lesson, but it's not really complete and doesn't have code samples: https://wiki.mozilla.org/User:Sardisson/Gecko_is_Gecko I think everyone agrees we need new content in that page on MDC, and a number of people like my general direction, but none of us have had time to get it into shape to replace the existing MDC content. If you have some time you can spend on it, or even just on making the existing MDC less bad, that would be great!

Oh my, they have propagated this to http://dailynews.yahoo.co.jp/ns/ as well (some part of Y! Japan I rarely visit).

Camino 2 has "like Firefox/3.0.16" in the user agent string and I got the same content as Firefox. But still reproducible with Firefox nightly builds and SeaMonkey.

Removing the dependency on Yahoo.com because Yahoo! Japan is a separate company. (co-branding only)
No longer blocks: yahoo.com

Still an issue - but the page you get is quite pretty and light, I think I'll start spoofing as Camino for this site to get it :)

Settings back to [needscontact], it's been a long time since someone was previously in contact. That said, I do not have high hopes of anything happening here, unfortunately.

The issue is still reproducible. Moving this to the correct product and component, since it is an issue specific to SeaMonkey

Site is no longer accessible outside Japan but even there nothing we can do. It is up to the site operator to support alternate browsers based on user agent.
