By default extensions and themes will ask AMO if there are updates available and will update themselves as appropriate. Search engines support an older <updateUrl> and a newer <Url> scheme which should update the engines (but I can't get to work). We've had some discussion about the pros and cons of allowing search engines to update themselves in bug 478278 and our conclusion is that they should be treated like all the other extensions in Firefox - updating should work and should point to AMO by default using the same URL scheme as extensions. (AMO will need some modification on how it versions search engines before it's setup, however, without buy-in on the client side it won't do any good)
