Build ID: 2000081308 In both the Customize Sidebar and the Customize Search dialog (and the Customize Character Coding dialog...another bug on that coming soon), you're pretty much doing the same thing: transferring items between two trees. So it's logical that the two be laid out similarly, in terms of UI. I think the Add and Remove button should be between the two trees, with the indicative arrows (as the Customize Search dialog has). This makes the dialog much easier to figure out, and the Add and Remove buttons don't belong in their current position (below each tree).
Blake, what you probably need to do here is file a bug for the creation of list-transfer-overlay.xul and list-transfer-overlay.js, as standard parts of XPToolkit. These would provide: * the two trees, with captions provided by the parent chrome * the `> Add' and `< Remove' buttons * `Up' and `Down' buttons, if a certain flag set by the parent chrome was set to `true' (if it was set to `false', items in the second list could only appear in the same order as they appeared in the first list) * drag-and-drop capability. So wherever dialogs involved transferring stuff between two lists, they could use exactly the same layout, and the layout could be improved in one file to improve the UI wherever it occurs.
I've already done that exact thing (search for bugs filed by me), but I can't dig up the number right now because Bugzilla isn't cooperating with IE (known problem, somewhere...)
reassigning to matt and wondering why this wasn't done earlier in a mass change...

I agree this would be a good thing© I'd also add the ability that the source list should stretch in width with a resizable dialog, since the source list is likely to have more items which may even be organized in a folder hierarchy© ¥there was an older bug for that for customize sidebar which matt@netscape fixed¤© Is matt also the right person to create this enhancement or would this fall in ben's plate?¥cc'd¤© Resetting component to XPApps:GUI since this is not sidebar specific©

chanial wants to work on D&D in the customize search dialog (see bug 45292). Putting him in the CC so he doesn't just do it in the search, but in all affected dialogs

Not doing this for the time being, especially since "Customize Search" is gone.
