When I setup my win machine to hide cursor while typing it works in e.g notepad but not in firefox/thunderbird. Sometimes it's really annoying.

Seems like there is no native support for this in windows. We only have the information the option is turned on or off in the system through SystemParametersInfo with SPI_GETMOUSEVANISH param.
This apparently needs to be implemented manually on our side.
Summary: Should implement events for hiding mouse cursor while typing → Implement "Mouse vanish" aka "Hide cursor when typing" feature

As desktop behaviour / protocol is emerging and being redefined with the development of Wayland and Weston (libinput) I would state that the lack of this feature is not Windows OS related.
I assert that it's a general requirement for all desktop apps.
This feature is needed as the implementation of it in Windows XP+ stands.
Other desktop environments are dealing with this, e.g.: https://lxr.kde.org/ident?_i=setAutoHideCursor&_remember=1
This is also a requirement for Google Chrome:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=254430
The web page can manage to hide the mouse pointer with CSS2+ therefore it should not be part of FF. However this feature is highly needed -IMHO- as the web address link contains non vocabulary words/letters, therefore having the mouse pointer within that area can upset anyone (as it upsets me).
