i have a lot of history. when i first open the history menu, all of firefox freezes for 5-10 seconds before the menu opens up.
instead of querying all of history to get this limited set of items, we should instead asynchronously populate the list just after startup, cache the result, and use a history observer to update it.

well, this is insurance against that, but marking dependent just in case.
1. we don't know if that change will make 3.5
2. that still involves querying all of history, will never perform as well as not querying anything at all

Not only does it take some time, but also the History menu seems to "forget" halfway that I just clicked on it. So after 15 seconds it just stops without displaying the result. The same kind of behaviour I see in the locationbar BTW.
