Message "This is a news feed in an old format, which does not store the Summary of the news item. Therefore it cannot be displayed." is prompted, but the summary was not selected for the feed. User action, click on OK button, is required to continue.

This happens for each new message from the feed. Raising severity to normal.
Severity: minor → normal

Please provide some more details to make this report useful to us:
- Which version of Thunderbird are you seeing this problem in (paste info from Help -> About)
- When did this start? (i.e. is it a regression)
- Which feed urls are you seeing this on?

"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1b5pre) Gecko/20090504 Shredder/3.0b3pre"
The feed involved is <http://deelnemersraadspin.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default>.
I can't indicate regression, as I did not test any RSS feed in version 3 beta on earlier versions.
The message does not occur in the current v2 release, i.e. "Mozilla 5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC MacOS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.1.21) Gecko/20090302 Thunderbird/2.0.0.21 Mnenhy/0.7.6.666 ID:2009030215", when reading new messages on this feed.

Did you opt to view the whole page of the feed items?

No I did not. I just view the summary.

With viewing the complete page I still don't get the error.

Note: the above occurs for both, read and unread (new) messages!
To complete the testcase:
removed and added the feed again with summary checked, this time.
result: open message gives no message prompt and the summary is displayed OK.

Well, I cannot reproduce the problem any longer, after a "renewed" feed subscription in whole page fashion, i.e. summary option unchecked.
Who knows ..., there may have been a hiccup in the RSS feed at the time?
(I'll ask the web master of the site. Hang in.)

I saw this problem starting with the May 4th nightly build (I didn't installed the previous days so I don't know when it actually appeared).
The error was displayed only when trying to view messages downloaded with previous versions of Thunderbird. New messages do not cause the error but I am no longer able to display the full web page only the summary. Changing the display settings does nothing.
I have created a new profile to see if the problem is caused by a profile change/corruption but the behavior is the same.
I am using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1b5pre) Gecko/20090506 Shredder/3.0b3pre

prior to bug 438429, feeds were stored slightly differently than they are now. if, at feed subscribe time, the option was to not view Summary, then no Summary will ever be available. now, Summary and Web page are both stored and can be switched dynamically without changing the default. a global override was also introduced.
so, only 'old' feeds set up without Summary will show the alert if in Summary mode in the global override. setting the global override in View -> Feed Message Body as -> Default Format will honor whatever pref was chosen for that feed at subscribe time.

Ok, that works but, shouldn't the global override set to 'Default' by default?
When I upgraded to the new version, my feeds were displayed as summary rather than web page which was my default.

you are likely correct. please file a new bug to change the default pref rss.show.summary value to '2'. perhaps someone with the tb source can patch it in.
there's some argument for leaving it at summary, as one is no longer locked into either/or, and can switch easily, but it is awkward for old feeds.

The default should be to work exactly the same as it did in TB 2.0 (show the web page unless the user checked "Show the article summary" when subscribing). The individual viewer should always be presumed to know better than a web-site owner what to display on his screen.
