This error message is often associated with use - now or in the past - of an ask.com toolbar although I don't recall these symptoms before; However it may still be worth looking at the workaround for it to see if any preferences are set incorrectly http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions#Ask.com_Toolbar
Please restart Firefox in safe mode and try to reproduce the bug. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
and there is bug 479291
