Bug 119459 adds an option to add images to the addressbook. But (in the current version) its not possible to add an image to contacts in the Mac OS X addressbook, because at the moment Thunderbird is only able to readout the Apple Addressbook. The Apple Addressbook also has an image function. So the easiest way is to read out the image from the Apple Addressbook and display it in the Thunderbird "Mac OS X addressbook".
I'm not a developer, but I think this can be done with ABImageClient.
