I have a bunch of e-books in my bookmarks. They're usually a chapter to a page. It would be nice if I could bookmark my spot. If this option existed I'd keep less tabs open (I use open tabs to bookmark my spot currently).

Reproducible: Always
Here's a workaround you can immediately use while this bug sits unattended:
1. Install Greasemonkey - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 - and restart Firefox.
2. Visit http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/8356.user.js and click the Install button that appears.
3. Highlight and right-click -> Copy any portion of text where you are in the page
4. Add # to the end of the address and Paste the copied text after it, Enter.
5. If it works, add it as a bookmark for later retrieval.

You of course only need steps 3 to 5 for subsequent spot bookmarks, and someone could probably improve the script so it can be done in just one step, using the right-click menu or something.
I think this is probably a duplicate feature request.

There was a similar bug for Seamonkey, which was closed as WONTFIX, but I thought the Places system might make this easier to do. Another bug asked for the ability to bookmark a snippet of text, but this isn't that.
In case anyone looks up this bug looking for a way to bookmark a spot, it looks like the best option for now is the plugin FXPointer: http://www.codedread.com/fxpointer/
