The rendering of "Nafees Web Naskh" fonts under linux (bug#321952) was fixed in version 3.0. The Urdu letters joined correctly (Arabic joining). Now the fonts still work, but when in a text-box new characters are inserted, some of the characters in the following words break.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the Urdu wikipedia page http://ur.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rawalpindi
2. You must have "Nafees Web Naskh" fonts installed
3. Press Edit (wikipedia) to open a text-box
4. Navigate to a Urdu paragraph
5. Start writing in the middle and notice that some of the characters in the following word will stop joining (break).
Actual Results:
Inserting text in a Urdu paragraph with "Nafees Web Naskh" fonts affect the Arabic joining of characters

Expected Results:
The joining of characters should be unaffected by insertion of text
Severity: normal → critical
Version: unspecified → 3.5 Branch
The bug is also present in Firefox release 3.5 under MS Windows and is independent of a particular font. So this is much more serious bug than what was reported previously.

By the way, something to bear in mind when filing bugs in future: it's a shame that this didn't have a more informative summary. If I had picked up on it when it was originally reported, we might have had time to get a fix in for 3.5.
