With several tabs oben, if I close one the tab bars hides and there is no way to get it back except file/new tab which leaves me with a lot of blank tabs.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open three tabs
2. close one - especially the right-most one
3. bar vanishes
Actual Results:  
tab bar vanished

Expected Results:  
as always so tab bar is checked - I expect Firefox to always show the tab bar

this sounds like beig caused by an extension.
Please try to reproduce in Safe Mode, this will temporarly disable your extensions.

if that works you can then disable extensions one by one in normal mode to find the culprit.
