Details

I've been seeing this with pretty much every windows 2000 build I've tried, although lately, more installations have been failing then succeeding. What happens is: 1) I go to x.themes.org and click on the button to download the Native Windows theme (this happens with other themes, AND the PSM installation). 2) The "Install" dialog comes up. I select the package, and hit OK. 3) The "Download/installing" dialog comes up. Now either two things happen: 4a) The dialog starts showing downloading/installation status within a few seconds. If it shows the status within a few seconds, the rest of the operation succeeds with no problem. OR 4b) If the dialog DOESN'T show status within a few seconds, then it almost ALWAYS fails (in fact, I don't remember a situation where it hasn't failed if status doesn't show up in a few seconds). The dialog will show "resolving host.foo" and stay there forever. Furthermore, hitting the "cancel" button at that point doesn't do anything. I have to close all of the browser windows, then bring up the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and hit "kill process" while hilighting the "software installation" entry. Windows reports that "This process is not responding to the system", and I have to forcibly kill it. I'm behind a squid http and ftp proxy. I don't know which component should own this bug, but it is either the networking component people or the installer people. I'm going to assign to the installer component first, because you can probably reassign this bug better to the specific network components that you are using.
I have been seeing this also at work behind a proxy (squid). Hever had a problem at home. Last version used at work was nightly August 22 on Win95, but I have problems for a while.
I'm seeing this also on WinNT4.

This kind of sounds like a problem with ftp that we've seen.
are there bugs already open on it that we can dupe this bug to?
Possibly 53429.
Sean said to go ahead and mark this as a dupe of 53429. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 53429 ***

Ok, that was weird. I didn't touch any of that stuff. Let's see if this submission messes it up again.
