I've had this happen with a few times with messages that had 500/600 KB attachments and a small text introduction.

The message came in, i read the small body, did other things. Then when i come back to the message the body doesn't show like it did earlier. Only "This body part will be downloaded on demand. "

This is quite disturbing, as there's no way to get the message text to show. It's ok on the server and can be viewed correctly using webmail (like it did in thunderbird originally).

If i view the source of the message, the original short text isn't there, and even if i copy the message from the imap folder to another server, the copy is also corrupted.

Are talking about IMAP access with incomplete offline synchronization? 
If yes, that's bug 468637.

Don't know the cause, but sounds the same yeah.
