With bug 460960 having landed would be good to have separate preferences for tabmail. I know it will complicate things slightly when it comes to merging tabmail and tabbrowsing but I think users will value being able to control tabmail separately to tabbrowsing.
To get some list started:

 * mail.tabs.autoHide (counterpart to browser.tabs.autoHide) to hide the bar
   if just a single tab is left (e.g., when using tabs for primarily one
   component but not the other);

 * When opening messages, display them in a {new,existing} {tab,window} to
   define the default behavior on double-clicking a message;

 * Behavior when opening a new tab (Ctrl+T): Clone current tab or open as a
   default 3-pane view [also considering a potential trap noted in bug 514176,
   which unfortunately was won't-fixed before any discussion took place].

The question is how many of the other Browser > Tabbed Browsing options have to be replicated for mail tabs. Link open behavior was used to open message links to a web page already before, and those rather relate to Browser anyway.

bug 514476 created for the mail.tabs.autoHide part.

Question: Shouldn't this bug (513905) be marked as meta?
It seems there needs to be a discussion on what the purpose, usefulness, and specifications for tabbed mail should be.

One of my requests would be the ability to have one account per tab, and save that layout. Right now I a set up two tabs for two separate accounts, and change the open folders in one of them, the other tab displays the revised layout, so what use is the second tab?

Ian, what is your plan with this bug? Do you want to collect ideas first from which specific bugs can be derived (likely for SM 2.1 then as 2.0 won't allow any new features added) or should this be a meta bug just for keeping track of suggestions? Some of those stated here go well beyond a simple replication of tabbed-browsing preferences to mail/news tabs.
Yes, this is a meta bug to track bugs to implement the various additional preferences.

I've spun off the remaining two suggestions into bug 515505 and bug 515506,
also added bug 513515 to the dependency list.

... of my comment #1, missed that detail (sorry).
I'd like to see the preference "never use mail tabs"

personally I use navigator tabs extensively -- often more than 10 open -- and always display the navigator tab bar.
For mail, I would rather use additional windows (rarely more than 1 additional), and save screen space by not showing the tab bar. (I use the 3-pane view.)
