I've noticed in recent builds (about the last week or so) that the throbber does
various things on different platforms, none of them actually being the right thing.

on mac, it _vanishes_ when it is supposed to be animating
on win32, it just never animates. ever.

this is with various skins, etc. cc'ing skin people too.
