528350 - large background images used on several TV station sites causes brief hangs when switching tabs, closing tabs, etc.

STR:

1) Have a news article page from the affected site open. For instance:

http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/local/kalamazoo_and_battle_creek/Kalamazoo_Bookmobile_service_discontinued

or

http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/crime/Man_bites_off_ear_in_road_rage_incident_20090402

2) Switch *to* its tab from another tab, or close its tab.

ER: Switch or close happens instantly.

AR: There is about a five- to ten-second hang before the action occurs.

This sometimes happens when switching away from the tab or when scrolling within the tab as well, though it's not as reproducible.

Can't repro in equivalent Firefox, but this has been happening with Camino trunk on PPC and Intel for quite some time. It happens fast enough that I'm not sure a sample would catch it, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm sure there's a minimal testcase that will trigger it, but I haven't gotten annoyed enough to investigate further. I'm just now getting annoyed enough to file it ;)

Smokey suggested turning off image loading, which does indeed fix the problem. Turns out this site is loading a handful of gigantic images:

among others. I didn't bother examining the entire source, but as far as minimal testcases go, I can repro a very similar hang merely by loading that enormous PNG file on its own.

I see the same behaviour on FX 3.0.x fwiw, maybe a little faster.

yeah the largish gradient background image attached to the body element is partly the cause. I regularly see the same behaviour on MacNN & TUAW, which uses multiple largish background images. On Minefield the problem doesn't happen on my side.

Chris, does it happens to the same extend if you make your browser window smaller (smaller than the contents box for those sites ?).

Iirc, there are indeed a couple of bug on large images. Need to look them up.

This sounds a lot like a dupe of bug 430106, now that I've done some more digging. This query may be helpful if anyone else is interested in doing further digging.
