When a new tab is opened it will not close. The white "x" in the red box appears but when I click on it nothing happens. Using a mouse right-click to close tab does not work either nor does the hot-key for close. Only resolution is closing Firefox and clicking "quit". Result is multiple tabs that have been opened to different web pages but cannot be closed, resulting in a slightly slower Firefox experience.

I am using the "Pitch Dark" theme, v3.5.0 (latest available). If a second window is opened and tabs are used, they work as expected and close as expected. It appears to happen only in one session or another, never more than one at a time.

Maybe caused by an extension? Have you already tried safe-mode / a new profile?

I can confirm this also. It is reproducible sometimes and there seems to be significant factor (website, time) that causes it. I am only running a few add-ons and Firefox 3.7pre alpha.

Now there is a new element: twice today I had two tabs open. When I closed out one tab (newest created), with the "x", it closed and then reopened a new tab "(untitled)" and would not allow me to close that one.

Add that once one tab does not close, any additional tabs that are opened in the same session will not close individually either.

For the progress of this but it is important to know if it is reproducible in safe-mode and with a new profile. See comment 1.

I have not reproduced it in safe or with a new profile, but it was also fine for about 2 weeks as it was originally. It appears to happen randomly, no specific add-on, no specific website. No "trigger".

I have not encountered anymore problems with tabs being generated and not closing since upgrading to Firefox 3.6 and then to 3.6.2.
