I liked the idea of sending the bug entry updates as a diff. And I think it would be especially nice to be able to personalize the diff options. For example, I would prefer to receive unified diffs instead of context ones.
Um, what's a "unified diff"? How can I generate one? I'm not likely to give that level of personalized control here; I don't think it worth the coding hassle. But, hey, if you can convince me that unified diffs are better, I could just change it so that everyone gets them...
Unified diff is produces by "diff -u". It is very similar to the context diff, but more compact. For example, the context diff *************** *** 3,9 **** Version: 1.0 Platform: X-Windows OS/Version: Linux ! Status: NEW Resolution: Severity: enhancement Priority: P3 --- 3,9 ---- Version: 1.0 Platform: X-Windows OS/Version: Linux ! Status: ASSIGNED Resolution: Severity: enhancement Priority: P3 would become @@ -3,9 +3,9 @@ Version: 1.0 Platform: X-Windows OS/Version: Linux - Status: NEW + Status: ASSIGNED Resolution: Severity: enhancement Priority: P3

OK, sold. (As proof, the e-mail notification you receive showing this bug has been fixed should use unified diffs.)
Well, I received 3 empty messages...
Yep; that didn't work at all. (And yet, it did work in my testbed...) I have backed out the change, and will try to figure out what's going on.
The database is being reorganized a bit. Instead of the Bugzilla product, a new Webtools product has been created, with Bugzilla being a component of it. This bug is being moved from the old Bugzilla product to the new Webtools product.
Clearing Fixed resolution for now.
Reassigning to email@example.com, who now has front-line responsibility for all Bonsai and Bugzilla bugs.
Reassigning back to me. That stuff about me no longer being the front-line person responsible for Bugzilla and Bonsai turned out to be short-lived. Please pardon our confusion, and I'm very sorry about the spam.
firstname.lastname@example.org is the new owner of Bugzilla and Bonsai. (For details, see my posting in netscape.public.mozilla.webtools, news://news.mozilla.org/38F5D90D.F40E8C1A%40geocast.com .)

Unified diffs greatly enhance readability and it shouldn't be harder than replacing "diff -u" instead of "diff". Something that prohibits this change?
I believe that the new ("experimental") format is better than either unified or ordinary diff.
i concur. the new email tech is much more readable than either diff. going to mark this bug as waiting feedback in the status whiteboard. if i don't get any, going to close it.
Whiteboard: waiting feedback
My feedback: As long the old email tech is supported, it should be diff -u. I prefer the new email tech, though.
The old-mail system is on it's way out... Maybe we should make it uglier still so people will feel compelled to change to the new-mail system. Seriously, though, my recommendation on this is WONTFIX (Terry tried it once and for unkown reasons it caused the diffs not to show up at all. Not worth the effort in tracking down the problem for the people who haven't changed their mail preference).

Old emailtech is going away. No reason to put any effort into this. WONTFIX!

VERIFY. mozilla.org already switched everyone over and I'm 90% done w/the patch to completely remove the oldmail code.
