I get failures on these reftests on my Linux desktop (running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic)
> layout/reftests/text/line-editing-1a.html
> layout/reftests/text/line-editing-1b.html
> layout/reftests/text/line-editing-1c.html
> layout/reftests/text/line-editing-1d.html
> layout/reftests/text/line-editing-1e.html
Attaching failure log (suitable for feeding to reftest-analyzer.xhtml).
Each reftest has 1px of difference, except for test '1d', which has 3px of difference. The differing pixels all seem to be turquoise pixels at the bottom-right edge of a replaced 'X' character. (probably from antialiasing?)

FWIW, I'm using 'subpixel smoothing' on fonts, in the gnome "Appearance Properties" dialog's "Fonts" tab. (I believe this was the default setting.) That's probably what's responsible for the pixel being blue.

Here's the reftest failure log, when I run with subpixel smoothing disabled. (I changed "Rendering" to "Monochrome", in Fonts tab of gnome-appearance-properties)
Still fails, but with a single gray pixel instead of a turquoise/blue pixel.

FWIW, I tried reverting Bug 539925 (which made a minor tweak to these reftests), and that didn't fix the problem. So, this issue dates back to the creation of these reftests, in bug 504524.
