Hello.

When the message pane is hidden and you open a message in a new tab in the thread pane, you will no longer be able to go back to the thread pane. It appears the thread pane automatically becomes unchecked from view > layout

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open SeaMonkey Mail > View > Layout > Hide Message Pane
Next > Open a Message from the thread pane in an new tab, go to new tab > close tab > you will see that the thread pane window appears to be blank > this issue seems related to pane settings not being remembered. > The thread pane is no longer checked by going to view > layout >
I can confirm this bug and add some additional details.

What I found happens is that, after opening an email in a new tab, the first tab had changed from a white background, to a grey background and no panes were visible, neither were the panes' dividers. All the pane options in View | Layout were unchecked and checking them had no effect at all!

With the Folder Pane and the Message Panes 'collapsed' rather than unchecked, the behaviour is slightly different. After opening an email in a new tab, the first tab again turns grey, but the Message Pane divider is visible at the top of the window, clicking on it changes the background back to white, but doesn't open the pane, and the divider can't be dragged.

In this situation, though, the options in View | Layout show only the Message Pane checked but the other panes can be restored by checking the relevant option.

I think the behaviour of the check marks for these options is misleading.

When Mail is opened, the Folder and Thread Pane's dividers are shown, and those options are shown as checked. The Message Pane divider is hidden and that option is unchecked.

If a pane is collapsed using the grippy in the divider, the divider moves to the edge of the window, but the option for that pane becomes unchecked.

What I think should happen is that, as long as a divider is visible, the option should remain checked, only being unchecked when the divider is hidden.

I also think that, when opening Mail, the Message Pane divider should not be hidden by default.

Regards,

Dave.
