<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/download.html#nightly> links to the old comm-1.9.1 based nightly builds. It should link to the new comm-central based nightly builds instead.

Which of the two routes should be followed by users of 3.0.3?

Users of 3.0.* should use the released Lightning 1.0b1 version. There are no later nightly versions recommended to use with Thunderbird 3.0.* builds.
